Over here at the tapecrate, we do things differently. This ain’t your average Hip Hop blog. It ain’t your average anything, period. So our mixes ain’t neither. I got me the weirdest DJ I know and told him to mix it up on the „Cookin‘ Up the Crack Murder Rap Shit“ and put together an underground mix one can go ALL OUT to. Well, that’s what „The Dirrrty Thirrrty“ is all about: murder music and ghetto tales mixed in a way your average DJ doesn’t. The 30th of the month marks the day, you can go crunk wit it! Thirrrty Minutes of Crunk! Oh, by the way: that cracker on the cover ain’t Franz. Just some random redneck.
Prodigy kicks some new heat off of HNIC 3 feat. Wiz Khalifa. Song is…far from what I would P like to be. But it’s aight for a few car rides across the blvd – I guess.
Remember that A$AP Rocky-song feat. Lana Del Rey, I posted yesterday? Well, looks like this one wasn’t QUITE finished, but a reference track to be finished. Check out what the Pretty Muthafucka had to say on Twitter:
RZA finally makes his directional debut with „The Man with The Iron Fists„, written by The Prince Rakeem and Eli Roth. Who? Eli Roth – that guy that wrote „Hostel„. So you KNOW it’s gonna get serious. Cast features Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu, Pam Grier and Chung Le. Peep the trailer:
People throw around the word „classic“ way too often. An album with 5 strong cuts ain’t no classic. „Born Bad?“ is one though. The Proud Son of Kings, aka South Park Coalition-member PSK-13 came hard and sharp on his sophomore release. When his debut-EP dropped in 1993, talent was obvious – but it was raw like an uncut diamond. „Born Bad?“ embodies his magnum opus – it’s straight Princess Cut.
1997 saw PSK coming up with a stellar roster of producers and features, including O.G. Ice-T, former Bigtyme Recordz labelmates UGK, 20-2-Life, Ghetto Twiinz, Klondike Kat, Point Blank & Ice Lord aka Wreckless Klan.
One of the standout tracks definitely is „Like Yesterday„, featuring Bun B & Pimp C bka UGK
This one is that classic Texas Country Tunes-sound you expect to hear from the Kaaaaangs! Wah Wah-Guitars, Organs, 808-Drums and runnin‘ Hi Hats. Lyrics somewhere between childhood memories and adulthood bitterness, shows you what makes this release so special: it’s real. No effects, no image – just realness. Pain and experience transcribed into music.
But that’s not everything „Born Bad?“ has to offer: tracks like „Big Playaz“ see PSK in full baller mode, bein‘ assisted by Klondike Kat and legendary Ice-T, who pays respect to the Houston rap scene, as well as the ballin‘ lifestyle. One of the coldest MCs to ever grab a mic. And that you can quote.
It doesn’t matter if you find Mr. 13 Wayz talkin‘ about God (as in „Guilty„), spittin‘ that Gangsta Funk (see „Headed fo‘ my Trunk (Remix)„, which is an revamped version from the one found on his debut-EP), or simply dreamin‘, as he does in „Wake Up (All A Dream)“ – it works. It fits. It creates a perfect picture. The epitome of South Coast Funk. Gumbo Music. Soul Food transported through Rap.
I really can’t tell how many times I found myself simply zonin‘ out to the album at night time. Losin‘ my mind over all the thought put into this great LP. Gettin‘ high or amp, fallin‘ asleep or in a deep thought process. This one right here is the Dirty South. Get it whenever you have the chance to!
I wanna finish this one with THE jam on this one: „Da Youngsta“ featurin‘ Ice Lord doin‘ the hook. I really don’t wanna lose any words on it. Play it. Bump it. Feel it. Understand it.
O.G. Big Boi teams up with Southern legends UGK (yup – that’s Bun B AND Pimp C!) and B.G. Big K.R.I.T. for his latest single Gossip. And shit is BANGIN‘ – seems like „Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumours“ is gonna pick up where „Sir Lucious Left Foot“ left. Shout Outs to Greg Street for premiering!
Recently I had the chance to touch down with the hottest MC in the game right now: A$AP Rocky that is. He and his crew invaded Berlin on his European tour…and boooooy what a blast this was! Venue filled with weed smoke, fine girls everywhere and the A$AP Mob doin‘ what they do best: raisin‘ hell!
Right before the concert took place, John and me sat down with Rocky and chopped it up for 93.6 JAM FM Berlin. Talk was about Screw-Tapes, haters and stardom.
We kicked it off with the obvious: DJ Screw! The man & the myth has been referenced continously in Rocky’s music, so I grabbed my vintage 3 ‚N The Mornin‘, pulled it out the pocket and asked the Pretty Flacko what he knows about the maze!
So after the foundation was built, we got a lil‘ deeper into it, talking about how Rocky was first introduced to Screwed Music. By the way: his favorite Screw-song is „25 Lighters„. How could you not love DJ DMD, Fat Pat & Lil Keke?!
Things got a lil‘ more serious afterwards when we talked about Hip Hop’s No. 1 Topic: haters! Hear how Mr. A$AP deals with hate and how he explains hateration as a whole.
The Pretty Muthafucka seems so vivid, so graphic – it’s almost impossible to believe A$AP Rocky is a real person but more of a piece of art. Rocky breaks it down pretty simple though…
With the Rakim-reference bein‘ made, I had to ask Rocky about the interview with Angie Martinez, when she brought the God Rakim in the studio and introduced him to A$AP. Now, since it’s pretty sure to say Angie’s his favorite radio personality for that, I wanted to know WHO I had to introduce to Rocky for that new No. 1-spot.
Now, the next question is pretty strange from a retrospective, since there’s some MAJOR funk goin‘ on between Rocky’s A$AP Mob and SpaceGhostPurrp’s RVIDXR KLVN, but two weeks ago, this is what Rocky had to say about SPG and their „situation“.
Comes across pretty awkward considering all the twitter-beefin‘, the youtubin‘ and all the rah-rah goin‘ on right now between A$AP and the KLVN! Let’s just all hope the funk ain’t gonna get physical but that they’ll squash their situation and continue to produce heat like they did with Purple Swag, Pretty Flacko and all that good shit.
Nonetheless, we finished off the interview with a lil‘ insight on how stardom comes naturally to the leader of the Mob, even though it’s puzzling sometimes when you wake up in a hotel room and don’t really know where you are…
Right afterwards Rocky invited us to stay with him and the Mob to hang out and have a good time. Just after we got ourselves something so smoke, I sat down with A$AP Yams had some mad conversation about Screw tapes and hoochies and just zoned out. Mad respect at Yams for that Screw-skull on his neck and the whole Mob for all the love they where showin‘ me. Special shout out goes to Geeno for the company and his hospitality and also J Scott & Chace Infinite.
Oh…and for all of you that weren’t fortunate enough to witness the show, just peep this as a lil‘ glimpse of what went down when A$AP crashed the Festsaal Kreuzberg:
